Painting Description
The High Altar of St. Mary, also known as the Crucifixion, is a monumental Gothic altarpiece created by the renowned German sculptor Veit Stoss. Completed between 1477 and 1489, this masterpiece is housed in St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, Poland, and is considered one of the most significant works of late medieval art in Central Europe. The altarpiece stands at an impressive height of approximately 13 meters (42 feet) and spans 11 meters (36 feet) in width when fully opened, making it one of the largest Gothic altarpieces in the world.
Veit Stoss, born around 1447 in Nuremberg, was a master sculptor and woodcarver whose work is characterized by its intricate detail, emotional expressiveness, and dynamic compositions. The High Altar of St. Mary is a testament to his exceptional skill and artistic vision. The central scene of the altarpiece depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by the Twelve Apostles, while the side panels illustrate various scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and the Passion of Christ. The altarpiece is crafted from limewood and features a combination of polychromy and gilding, which enhances its visual impact and highlights the intricate details of the carvings.
The High Altar of St. Mary is not only a religious and artistic treasure but also a symbol of the cultural and historical heritage of Kraków. It has survived numerous historical events, including the Swedish invasion of Poland in the 17th century and the turmoil of World War II. During the latter, the altarpiece was dismantled and hidden by the Nazis, only to be recovered and restored to its rightful place after the war.
Today, the High Altar of St. Mary continues to attract visitors from around the world, who come to admire its breathtaking beauty and to appreciate the remarkable craftsmanship of Veit Stoss. Its enduring legacy serves as a reminder of the rich artistic traditions of the Gothic period and the enduring power of religious art to inspire and move viewers across the centuries.
