Painting Description
The High Altar of St. Mary, also known as the Altarpiece of the Apostles, is a monumental late Gothic sculpture created by the renowned German sculptor Veit Stoss. This masterpiece, situated in St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, Poland, stands as one of the most significant and intricate examples of wooden altar art in Europe. Crafted between 1477 and 1489, the altar was commissioned by the Kraków citizens and the Polish king, highlighting the cultural and religious significance of the piece during the period.
Veit Stoss, originally from Nuremberg, moved to Kraków where he undertook this ambitious project, which would later be considered one of his magnum opuses. The altar, standing approximately 13 meters high and 11 meters wide when fully opened, showcases an elaborate array of biblical scenes, primarily focusing on the life of the Virgin Mary and the Passion of Christ. Its central panel depicts the Dormition of the Virgin, surrounded by a multitude of figures, including the Twelve Apostles, with an attention to detail and emotional depth that was unparalleled at the time.
The High Altar of St. Mary is not only a testament to Stoss's mastery in woodcarving but also serves as a valuable historical document, reflecting the artistic, religious, and social currents of late 15th-century Poland. Its preservation and restoration efforts over the centuries underscore its importance to Polish cultural heritage and its enduring appeal to both scholars and visitors alike. The altar remains a focal point of religious life in Kraków and a must-see masterpiece for art enthusiasts around the world, embodying the pinnacle of Gothic art in Poland.
