Painting Description
The High Altar of St. Mary, often referred to as the High Altar of St. Mary's Basilica, is a monumental Gothic altarpiece created by the renowned German sculptor Veit Stoss between 1477 and 1489. Located in St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków, Poland, this masterpiece is considered one of the most significant works of late Gothic art in Europe. The altarpiece stands at an impressive height of approximately 13 meters (42 feet) and spans 11 meters (36 feet) in width when fully opened, making it the largest Gothic altarpiece in the world.
The central theme of the altarpiece is the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which is depicted in the central panel. Surrounding this scene are twelve apostles, who are shown in various states of mourning and reverence. Above the central panel, the Coronation of the Virgin is depicted, symbolizing her ascension to heaven and her crowning as the Queen of Heaven. The side panels of the altarpiece illustrate scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, including the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Resurrection.
One of the most striking features of the High Altar of St. Mary is the intricate and expressive carving of the figures, which showcase Veit Stoss's exceptional skill in woodcarving. The figures are characterized by their dynamic poses, detailed drapery, and lifelike expressions, which convey a sense of movement and emotion. The altarpiece is also notable for its use of polychromy and gilding, which enhance the visual impact of the sculptures.
The High Altar of St. Mary has undergone several restorations over the centuries, with significant efforts made in the 19th and 20th centuries to preserve its original appearance. Despite these interventions, the altarpiece remains a testament to the artistic and technical prowess of Veit Stoss and continues to be a focal point of St. Mary's Basilica, attracting visitors and art enthusiasts from around the world.
