Painting Description
Colley Cibber (1671-1757) was an English actor-manager, playwright, and Poet Laureate. He was a prominent figure in the London theatre world during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in London, Cibber was the son of Caius Gabriel Cibber, a distinguished sculptor. He began his career in the theatre as an actor and gradually made a name for himself with his comedic roles and managerial skills. Cibber's most notable contribution to the theatre was his work as a playwright. He wrote over 25 plays, many of which were comedies that enjoyed considerable success. His most famous play, "The Careless Husband" (1704), is still remembered for its wit and humor.
In addition to his work in the theatre, Cibber was appointed Poet Laureate in 1730, a position he held until his death in 1757. His tenure as Poet Laureate was marked by controversy, as many contemporaries criticized his poetic abilities. Despite this, Cibber's influence on the theatrical world was significant, and he played a crucial role in the development of English comedy.
The portrait of Colley Cibber engraved by Edward Fisher (1722-1785) is based on a painting by Jean-Baptiste van Loo, a renowned French portraitist. Van Loo's original painting captures Cibber in a dignified pose, reflecting his status as a leading figure in the arts. Edward Fisher, an accomplished engraver of the 18th century, translated Van Loo's painting into a detailed and expressive engraving. This work is an important visual representation of Cibber, providing insight into his appearance and the esteem in which he was held by his contemporaries. The engraving by Fisher remains a valuable piece of art, contributing to the historical record of one of England's notable literary and theatrical figures.
