Painting Description
"Views of Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces" (六十余州名所図会, Rokujūyoshū Meisho Zue) is a series of ukiyo-e prints by the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Ando Hiroshige. Created between 1853 and 1856, this series comprises 70 landscape prints, each representing a different province of Japan, which was then divided into a feudal patchwork under the Tokugawa shogunate. The series was commissioned by the prominent publisher Koshimuraya Heisuke during the final years of Hiroshige's life and is considered one of his last great works before his death in 1858.
Each print in the series captures the unique topography, historical landmarks, and seasonal events of the featured province, reflecting Hiroshige's mastery in portraying atmospheric conditions and the subtleties of light and weather. The series not only offers insight into the geographical diversity of 19th-century Japan but also reflects the growing domestic travel and cultural curiosity among the Japanese populace during the Edo period. "Views of Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces" remains a significant artistic achievement in Hiroshige's oeuvre and a valuable historical document, illustrating the rich cultural tapestry of feudal Japan.
