Painting Description
''Upright Tōkaidō'' (竪絵東海道, ''Tate-e Tōkaidō'') is a series of ukiyo-e woodblock prints created by the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Andō Hiroshige, in the 19th century. This series, distinct from his more famous ''The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō'' (also known as the ''Hoeido Tōkaidō''), presents a vertical (portrait) orientation of the scenes, which is less common compared to the horizontal (landscape) format that was prevalent in Hiroshige's work and ukiyo-e art of the period. The ''Upright Tōkaidō'' consists of 55 prints, each depicting one of the 53 stations of the Tōkaidō road, along with the starting point in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and the endpoint in Kyoto, capturing the journey along the most important travel and trade route of the Edo period.
Hiroshige's ''Upright Tōkaidō'' is characterized by its innovative composition, with a focus on verticality that allows for a different perspective and depth in the portrayal of landscapes and figures. The series is notable for its artistic qualities, as Hiroshige skillfully uses the upright format to emphasize the height of mountains, the stretch of trees, and the stature of buildings, creating a dynamic and engaging visual narrative of the journey. Each print in the series is a blend of realism and romanticism, capturing the essence of the locations along the Tōkaidō with a keen eye for detail and atmospheric conditions.
The ''Upright Tōkaidō'' series was produced during Hiroshige's mature period and reflects his continued interest in travel and landscape themes. It contributes to the rich legacy of Hiroshige's work, showcasing his mastery of the ukiyo-e technique and his profound influence on the development of landscape art in Japan. The series remains an important cultural artifact, offering insights into the travel culture of the Edo period and the aesthetic values of the time. It is also a testament to Hiroshige's enduring popularity and the timeless appeal of his artistic vision.
