Painting Description
"Taisha Izumo Province" is a woodblock print by the renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Ando Hiroshige. Created in the mid-19th century, this print is part of Hiroshige's famous series "Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces" (Rokujūyoshū meisho zue), which was produced between 1853 and 1856. The series comprises a collection of landscapes from each of the provinces of Japan, as they were known during the Edo period.
The "Taisha Izumo Province" print depicts a scene from Izumo, an area steeped in Japanese mythology and known for the grand Izumo Taisha, one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan. Hiroshige's work often captures the interplay between humans and nature, and this print is no exception. It portrays travelers near the shrine, set against a backdrop of the region's natural beauty. The composition typically features a blend of Hiroshige's signature use of bold lines, vivid colors, and innovative perspectives that convey both the physical and emotional essence of the landscape.
As with many of Hiroshige's prints, "Taisha Izumo Province" reflects the artist's skill in creating atmospheric scenes that evoke a sense of place and season. The series to which this print belongs was one of Hiroshige's last major works before his death in 1858, and it is highly regarded for its artistic quality and its historical value as a record of Japan's cultural and geographic diversity during the Edo period. The prints from this series are considered some of Hiroshige's finest and are sought after by collectors and museums worldwide. They have been influential in the development of landscape art and have contributed to the Western perception of Japan as an exotic and aesthetically rich culture.
