Painting Description
"Oi. Quarante-Septieme Relais" (Oi. The Forty-Seventh Station) is a woodblock print by the renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Ando Hiroshige. This print is part of Hiroshige's famous series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō," which depicts each of the fifty-three post stations of the Tōkaidō, the coastal road linking Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto, the imperial capital. Created in the Hoeido edition around 1833–1834, this series is considered one of Hiroshige's greatest achievements and a seminal work in the ukiyo-e genre.
The print "Oi. Quarante-Septieme Relais" specifically illustrates the forty-seventh station along the Tōkaidō, capturing the unique characteristics and atmosphere of the Oi post town. Hiroshige's work is celebrated for its masterful composition, delicate use of color, and ability to evoke the feeling of the Japanese landscape and the experience of travel in the Edo period. His prints often include figures of travelers, local residents, and features of the natural environment, which in the case of the Oi station, may include the town's buildings, passersby, and possibly the surrounding landscape.
Hiroshige's Tōkaidō series was immensely popular in Japan and later gained significant recognition in the West, influencing European Impressionists and Post-Impressionists with its novel perspectives and stylized depictions of nature and everyday life. "Oi. Quarante-Septieme Relais" is a valuable historical and artistic record of 19th-century Japan and continues to be studied and admired for its aesthetic qualities and cultural significance.
