Painting Description
Mount Haruna in Snow, Ueno Province is a ukiyo-e woodblock print by the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Ando Hiroshige, and it is part of his series "Views of Famous Places in the Six Odd Provinces," which produced between 1853 and 1856. The series encompasses 70 prints, each representing a different province of Japan.
This particular print depicts Mount Haruna, a stratovolcano in Gunma Prefecture, historically a part of the Ueno Province. The scene is captured during the winter season, characterized by the snow-covered landscape, a common theme in Hiroshige's art, demonstrating his ability to convey varying weather and seasonal conditions.
The composition is dominated by the mountain, with its slopes and the neighboring landscape covered in a pristine, white snow blanket. The minimal colors used—in mainly blues and whites—engage the viewer in the chill of the winter season, demonstrating Hiroshige's unique ability to capture atmospheric conditions and the changing seasons in his works. The print provides an insight into Japanese geography and the everyday life of the people living in the countryside during Hiroshige's time.
As with other prints in the series, "Mount Haruna in Snow, Ueno Province" follows the vertical oban format, emphasizing the height and scale of the mountain, and is noted for its innovative composition, color usage, and display of depth and perspective. Hiroshige's ability to imbue the scene with a sense of tranquility and his choice of a less-known rural province as the focal point are fitting with his overall approach throughout the series, focusing on the natural beauty and unique character of different regions of Japan.
Please note that, like many ukiyo-e prints, multiple impressions of the same design may exist, and any individual print of "Mount Haruna in Snow, Ueno Province" may show slight variations in colors, wear, and age.
