Painting Description
"Meisho Edo Hyakkei" (名所江戸百景), translated as "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," is a series of ukiyo-e prints by the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Ando Hiroshige. Created between 1856 and 1858, during the Edo period, this series is considered one of Hiroshige's most significant and celebrated works, alongside his earlier series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō." "Meisho Edo Hyakkei" consists of 118 landscape prints that depict various seasonal and atmospheric scenes of Edo (modern-day Tokyo).
Hiroshige's work captures the beauty and daily life of the city through its famous places, with each print reflecting the artist's keen observation of nature, urban landscapes, and the interplay of light, color, and perspective. The series was published by Uoya Eikichi and showcases Hiroshige's mature artistic style, characterized by a masterful use of color and composition, which influenced not only Japanese art but also Western artists, particularly the Impressionists.
The prints in "Meisho Edo Hyakkei" are notable for their poetic titles and the inclusion of diverse subjects, from well-known shrines and temples to bridges, rivers, and bustling marketplaces. The series also captures the changing seasons and weather conditions, offering a vivid glimpse into the life and environment of Edo. Hiroshige's innovative techniques, such as the use of bokashi (color gradation), and his ability to evoke mood and atmosphere, make "Meisho Edo Hyakkei" a pinnacle of ukiyo-e landscape art.
Hiroshige's death in 1858 occurred before the completion of the series, and some of the prints were finished posthumously by his students. Today, "Meisho Edo Hyakkei" remains a testament to Hiroshige's legacy and is highly regarded for its historical and artistic value, providing insight into the urban culture of Edo before the Meiji Restoration and the rapid modernization of Japan. The series continues to be celebrated for its aesthetic beauty and cultural significance, and original prints are held in numerous museum collections worldwide.
