Painting Description
"Les 53 Stations du Tokaido, Shimada, Oi-gawa Shungan" is a renowned woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Ando Hiroshige, who was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period. This print is part of Hiroshige's famous series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" (Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi no uchi, 東海道五十三次之内), which was created in the 1830s. The series depicts the fifty-three post stations, plus the starting and ending points, along the Tōkaidō road, the major travel and trade route connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto.
The Shimada station, represented in this particular print, is the twenty-third stop along the Tōkaidō. It features the Oi River (Oi-gawa), which was one of the most challenging rivers to cross for travelers on the Tōkaidō due to its unpredictable currents and the absence of a bridge. In Hiroshige's print, travelers are depicted engaging with the river crossing, some being carried in kago (palanquins) by porters, while others wade through the water on foot or on horseback, showcasing the daily struggles and the lively activity associated with this location.
Hiroshige's work is celebrated for its masterful composition, use of color, and ability to capture the essence of each location, including the changing seasons, weather conditions, and the interactions of people with their environment. "Les 53 Stations du Tokaido, Shimada, Oi-gawa Shungan" is not only a valuable artistic representation of Edo-period Japan but also an important historical record of the cultural and social dynamics of the time. Hiroshige's series has had a lasting impact on both Japanese art and the genre of landscape prints worldwide.
