Painting Description
"Ishiyakushi" is a woodblock print from the renowned series "Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Andō Hiroshige. Created in the Edo period, this series was first published in the 1830s and depicts scenes from each of the 53 post stations of the Tōkaidō, the coastal road linking the shogunal capital of Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with the imperial capital of Kyoto.
The "Ishiyakushi" print represents the forty-fourth station of the Tōkaidō and features the Ishiyakushi-juku, which was the forty-third of the fifty-three stations of the Tōkaidō. It is named after the nearby Ishiyakushi Temple, which is dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of medicine and healing. In Hiroshige's composition, travelers are typically depicted along the route, engaging in various activities that reflect the daily life and culture of Japan during the time. The print captures the essence of the landscape and the atmosphere of the locale, often incorporating elements of weather, season, and time of day to enhance the mood and narrative.
Hiroshige's "Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" is one of his most famous works and was instrumental in establishing his reputation as a master of the landscape ukiyo-e genre. The series is celebrated for its innovative composition, delicate use of color, and ability to evoke a sense of place and journey. "Ishiyakushi," like the other prints in the series, is not only a valuable artistic representation of the Tōkaidō road but also an important cultural document that offers insight into the travel and trade practices of Edo-period Japan.
