Painting Description
"Famous Sites in Edo and Chapters from the Tale of Genji: Ferry on the Sumida River matched with the Ukifune Chapter" is a renowned work by Utagawa Hiroshige, who is also commonly known as Ando Hiroshige. Hiroshige was a celebrated ukiyo-e artist and the last great figure of the Ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world” tradition in the Edo period.
This artwork integrates two distinct and revered Japanese art categories: Genji-e (pictures of The Tale of Genji) and meisho-e (pictures of famous places). Reflecting Hiroshige's ingenuity, the piece presents the Ukifune chapter from Murasaki Shikibu's 11th-century novel, The Tale of Genji, superimposed onto a scene from the Sumida River, a much-loved site in Edo.
Ukifune, signifying "floating boat," is one of the last chapters of The Tale of Genji. Hiroshige underlines this section's themes of melancholic reflection and uncertain journeying by artfully juxtaposing Genji's watery sojourn with the vibrant Edo period activity on the Sumida River.
As for the technique and style, Hiroshige utilizes vivid colors to emphasize the dichotomy between the historical novel's characters and the everyday Edo populace. The spatial juxtaposition in this artwork attests to the transition from the aristocratic culture of the Heian Period, represented by The Tale of Genji, towards the rise of the urban middle class in the Edo Period.
