Painting Description
"Driving Rain at Shōno" (Shōno hakuu, 庄野白雨) is a renowned woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige, also known as Andō Hiroshige. Created circa 1833–1834, it is the forty-sixth print in Hiroshige's famous series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" (Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi no uchi, 東海道五十三次之内), which depicts scenes along the Tōkaidō road, the major travel and transport route connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto during the Edo period.
This particular print captures a dynamic scene of travelers struggling to move forward against a heavy downpour in the post-station town of Shōno, which was the forty-fifth of the fifty-three stations. The composition is noted for its dramatic depiction of the elements, with slanting lines representing the driving rain that dominates the scene, creating a sense of movement and urgency. The travelers, bent against the wind and rain, are shown with their hats and garments being buffeted, which conveys the intensity of the storm.
Hiroshige's use of perspective and the interplay of human figures with the natural environment are characteristic of his style and contribute to the enduring appeal of his work. "Driving Rain at Shōno" is particularly admired for its atmospheric effects and the artist's ability to evoke the sensory experiences of the journey along the Tōkaidō road.
As one of the most celebrated prints from Hiroshige's Tōkaidō series, "Driving Rain at Shōno" has been widely reproduced and remains an iconic image in the genre of Japanese landscape prints. It is held in numerous museum collections worldwide and continues to be studied and appreciated for its artistic and historical significance.
