Painting Description
"Tammeijiro Genshogo, from the Series Tsuzoku Suikoden Goketsu Hyakuhachinin" is a woodblock print by the renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861). This print is part of Kuniyoshi's famous series "Tsuzoku Suikoden Goketsu Hyakuhachinin" which translates to "The One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Popular Suikoden, All Told." The series, produced between 1827 and 1830, illustrates individual heroes from the classic Chinese novel "Shui Hu Zhuan," known in Japan as "Suikoden." This novel, attributed to Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong, was immensely popular in Japan and tells the tales of 108 outlaws who band together to form a Robin Hood-like brigade during the Song dynasty.
The print "Tammeijiro Genshogo" depicts the character Tammeijiro Genshogo, one of the 108 heroes, in a dynamic and expressive manner that is characteristic of Kuniyoshi's style. Kuniyoshi was particularly adept at portraying the muscular physiques and vivid expressions of the Suikoden warriors, often incorporating intricate tattoos, which were a sign of their bravery and a visual motif that resonated with the Edo-period audience.
Utagawa Kuniyoshi's work is celebrated for its creativity and technical excellence, and his Suikoden series contributed significantly to the popularity of warrior prints in ukiyo-e. The series not only reflects the Edo society's fascination with these legendary figures but also showcases Kuniyoshi's skill in capturing the essence of each character through his masterful use of line, color, and composition.
As a piece of the Tsuzoku Suikoden Goketsu Hyakuhachinin series, "Tammeijiro Genshogo" is a valuable example of Kuniyoshi's artistry and the ukiyo-e genre's capacity to convey narrative and emotion. It remains an important work for scholars and enthusiasts of Japanese woodblock prints, offering insight into the cultural and artistic milieu of the Edo period.
