Painting Description
''Suikoden Gōketsu Hyakuhachinin no Hitori'' (水滸伝豪傑百八人之一個), translated as "One Hundred and Eight Heroes of the Popular Suikoden, One by One," is a series of ukiyo-e woodblock prints created by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861). The series, produced between 1827 and 1830, is based on the classic Chinese novel ''Shui Hu Zhuan'', known in English as ''Water Margin'', ''Outlaws of the Marsh'', or ''All Men Are Brothers''. This novel, attributed to Shi Nai'an and Luo Guanzhong, is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature and recounts the tales of 108 outlaws who band together to form a sizable army before they are eventually granted amnesty by the government and sent on campaigns to defend the Song dynasty from foreign invaders and rebels.
Kuniyoshi's series was a pivotal work in his career and is considered one of his masterpieces. It gained immense popularity and was instrumental in establishing his reputation as a leading artist of the ukiyo-e genre. The prints in the series are characterized by their dynamic composition, vivid characterization, and the incorporation of supernatural elements, reflecting the heroic and often fantastical nature of the ''Water Margin'' narrative.
Each print in the series depicts one of the 108 heroes, often in a dramatic pose and accompanied by text that explains the character's name, deeds, and attributes. Kuniyoshi's imaginative portrayal of these figures, with their elaborate tattoos and expressive faces, captured the imagination of the Edo-period public and had a significant influence on the development of ukiyo-e and Japanese visual culture.
The series not only reflects the popularity of the ''Water Margin'' in Japan but also demonstrates the cross-cultural exchange between Japan and China. Moreover, it showcases the evolution of ukiyo-e as an art form that could convey complex narratives and character studies, moving beyond the more common themes of courtesans, actors, and landscapes that had dominated the genre.
''Suikoden Gōketsu Hyakuhachinin no Hitori'' remains a celebrated work in the oeuvre of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and continues to be studied and admired for its artistic innovation and its role in the history of Japanese art. The prints from this series are held in numerous museum collections worldwide and are highly sought after by collectors of Japanese woodblock prints.
