Painting Description
"Chomeiji Chinai Benten" is a notable woodblock print created by the renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Kuniyoshi, who lived from 1797 to 1861, is celebrated for his dynamic compositions and his role in the development of the ukiyo-e genre during the late Edo period. This particular print is part of Kuniyoshi's extensive body of work that often depicted historical and legendary figures, kabuki actors, beautiful women, and landscapes.
The title "Chomeiji Chinai Benten" refers to the Chomeiji Temple, which is dedicated to Benzaiten (Benten), the Japanese goddess of everything that flows: water, time, words, speech, eloquence, music, and by extension, knowledge. Benzaiten is one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) in Japanese mythology and is often depicted as a beautiful woman playing a biwa (a traditional Japanese lute). The Chomeiji Temple, located in the Sumida ward of Tokyo, is one of the many temples dedicated to her worship.
Kuniyoshi's depiction of Benzaiten in "Chomeiji Chinai Benten" is a testament to his skill in capturing the divine and ethereal qualities of mythological subjects. The print showcases Kuniyoshi's masterful use of color, intricate detailing, and his ability to convey movement and emotion. His portrayal of Benzaiten is both serene and powerful, embodying the grace and wisdom associated with the goddess.
This work is a fine example of Kuniyoshi's contribution to the ukiyo-e tradition, blending cultural reverence with artistic innovation. It reflects the Edo period's fascination with folklore and the supernatural, as well as the era's artistic advancements. Kuniyoshi's prints, including "Chomeiji Chinai Benten," continue to be celebrated for their artistic merit and their insight into Japanese culture and mythology.
