Painting Description
The Wilton Diptych is a small portable diptych of two hinged panels, painted on both sides, with the left panel depicting King Richard II of England being presented to the Virgin Mary and Child by his patron saints, and the right panel showing the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus surrounded by a company of eleven angels. Created by an unknown painter, the diptych is an exquisite example of late medieval panel painting, and it is one of the few surviving works of secular English panel painting from that era. The diptych is named after the Wilton House in Wiltshire, where it was housed for a time.
Believed to have been made for King Richard II's personal devotion, the diptych dates from the late 14th century, around 1395 to 1399. It is painted in tempera on oak and measures 53 cm high and 37 cm wide when open. The diptych is rich in symbolism and iconography, with the king being depicted in a pose of humility and veneration, while the reverse of the panels features Richard's white hart badge and a text from the Latin Mass.
The identity of the painter remains unknown, but the style suggests he was influenced by French and English court art, as well as possibly by Italian art. The Wilton Diptych is a masterpiece of International Gothic painting and is notable for its delicate coloring, intricate detail, and the use of gold leaf, which gives it a luminous quality.
Now housed in the National Gallery, London, the Wilton Diptych is recognized as a significant work of art due to its historical context, its association with Richard II, and its artistic beauty. It provides valuable insight into the religious and cultural milieu of the English court during the late 14th century and continues to be the subject of scholarly study and admiration.
