Painting Description
"Donna Con Ventaglio" is a painting completed in 1907 by Italian artist Umberto Boccioni. Boccioni one of the most prominent and influential artists in the th-century Italian Futurism movement, although "Donna Con Ventaglio," dating from an early point in his career, adheres more closely to the conventions of post-impressionism and divisionism rather than the Futurist style for which he later became known.
The painting features a woman, known only as the "donna" in the title, with a fan, or "ventaglio". The woman is portrayed in a semi-abstract style, her form constructed from a series of rapid and overlapping brushstrokes that suggest movement and energy. In her hand, she holds a fan, whose sharp, geometric lines contrast with the more soft, flowing forms of the woman's body and the surrounding environment.
The color palette Boccioni uses in "Donna Con Ventaglio" leans heavily towards warm and vibrant hues, combined with the daring brushwork, create an intense evocation of light and atmosphere. This aspect, along with the aforementioned abstract rendering of the woman and the fan, prefigures Boccioni's later move toward Futurism.
Despite its rather traditional theme, "Donna Con Ventaglio" shows the beginnings of Boccioni's break with convention and points to the new directions he and his fellow Futurists would take in their pursuit of dynamism and the ‘universal dynamism’ they sought to express. In this way, the painting holds significant place within Boccioni's oeuvre and the broader history of modern Italian art.
