Painting Description
"The Healing of the Cripple and Raising of Tabitha" is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Tommaso Masolino da Panicale, commonly known as Masolino. Created around 1425, this artwork is part of a series of frescoes painted by Masolino in the Brancacci Chapel, located in the Church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, Italy. The fresco illustrates two miraculous events from the Acts of the Apostles: the healing of a cripple by Saint Peter and the raising of Tabitha (also known as Dorcas) from the dead.
The fresco is renowned for its vivid portrayal of these biblical scenes, set against architectural backdrops that reflect Masolino's mastery of perspective, a technique that was still relatively novel at the time. In "The Healing of the Cripple," Saint Peter is depicted healing a beggar with a congenital disability, a scene that emphasizes the saint's divine power and compassion. Adjacent to this, "The Raising of Tabitha" shows Saint Peter at the moment he brings Tabitha back to life, surrounded by mourners who witness the miracle.
Masolino's work on the chapel was later joined by that of his more famous pupil, Masaccio, who contributed additional frescoes. Together, these works mark a significant development in the history of art, showcasing the transition from the Gothic style to the more naturalistic approach characteristic of the Renaissance. Masolino's frescoes, including "The Healing of the Cripple and Raising of Tabitha," are particularly noted for their graceful figures and the use of light and color to enhance the narrative impact of the scenes.
