Painting Description
The Polyptych of the Resurrection and St. Sebastian is a monumental artwork by the renowned Italian painter Tiziano Vecellio, more commonly known as Titian. Painted circa 1510–1522, this work exemplifies the early stage of Titian’s career where he was heavily influenced by his master, Giovanni Bellini, but was starting to show signs of his individualistic style of expression.
The Polyptych, as its name suggests, is a multi-panelled piece, which was a common format forarpieces in the High Renaissance period. This structure permits scenes to be depicted concurrently, and in Titian's work, there are scenes from the New Testament alongside the narrative of St. Sebastian, a popular Christian martyr in art during the time.
The central panel of the piece features the Resurrection of Jesus, a fitting theme for an altarpiece and a frequently tackled subject in Christian artwork. Around this central theme, Titian retells key events from the life and martyrdom of St. Sebastian. His portrayal of St. Sebastian is characteristically dramatic, utilizing contrast and colour to portray the emotional blitz of martyrdom.
Titian's polyptych is a typical example of the Venetian school's fondness for vibrant color and attention to detail. However, it also incorporates features that were novel at the time, such as the innovative way he used light to give depth and form to his figures.
The polyptych, with its combination of traditional format and innovative artistic technique, marks an important moment in Titian's career and the broader history of High Renaissance painting. As such, it continues to be an object of study, admiration, and reverence, representing a pivotal phase in the evolution of Western art.
