Painting Description
"Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints and the Pesaro Family," commonly known as "The Pesaro Altarpiece," is a renowned Renaissance painting by the Italian master Tiziano Vecellio, known as Titian. Completed in 1526, this oil on canvas masterpiece is housed in the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice, Italy. The altarpiece is a significant example of Venetian Renaissance art and is celebrated for its innovative composition and use of color.
The painting measures an imposing 4.88 meters in height and 2.69 meters in width, dominating the Frari's Pesaro Chapel for which it was specifically commissioned. The work was ordered by Jacopo Pesaro, a member of the prominent Pesaro family and the Bishop of Paphos, to celebrate both his family and the Venetian victory against the Ottomans at the Battle of Santa Maura.
In this altarpiece, Titian departs from the traditional central-axis composition commonly used in such religious works. Instead, he employs a dynamic diagonal arrangement that guides the viewer's eye across the canvas. The Virgin Mary and the Christ Child are seated on a high throne to the left, while St. Peter, St. Francis, and other saints are positioned around them in a semi-circular formation. To the right, members of the Pesaro family are depicted in contemporary dress, kneeling in veneration. Above them, an angel holds a banner with the cross, symbolizing the church's triumph.
Titian's use of color and light in this work is particularly noteworthy. The rich, vibrant hues and the dramatic contrasts of light and shadow enhance the three-dimensionality of the figures and contribute to the overall sense of movement within the painting. The Pesaro Altarpiece is a testament to Titian's mastery of color and his ability to convey religious themes with a sense of grandeur and human emotion.
The Pesaro Altarpiece remains a vital piece of Titian's oeuvre and a key work in the study of 16th-century Venetian painting. It continues to be admired for its artistic innovation and its role in the development of the Venetian High Renaissance style.
