Painting Description
"Diana and Callisto" is a painting by the Venetian Renaissance master Tiziano Vecellio, known in English as Titian, completed between 1556 and 1559 as part of a series of mythological paintings for King Philip II of Spain. This series, sometimes referred to as the "poesie," aimed to translate the poetic narratives of classical mythology into visual form, drawing primarily from Ovid's "Metamorphoses." The painting depicts the moment from the myth when the goddess Diana discovers the pregnancy of her nymph Callisto, a forbidden condition for the members of Diana's chaste entourage.
The artwork is renowned for its dramatic representation of the myth, the mastery of color and composition for which Titian is celebrated, and its exploration of themes such as voyeurism, betrayal, and the consequences of divine wrath. "Diana and Callisto" measures 187 cm × 204 cm (approximately 73.6 inches × 80.3 inches) and is executed in oil on canvas. The painting is characterized by its rich color palette, the dynamic interplay of gestures and gazes among the figures, and the lush, detailed landscape that serves as the backdrop for the narrative scene.
Originally part of the Spanish royal collection, the painting has a storied provenance, having passed through various European collections before becoming jointly owned by the National Gallery, London, and the National Galleries of Scotland in 2012. "Diana and Callisto," along with the rest of the "poesie," represents the pinnacle of Titian's artistic achievement and contributes significantly to the understanding of Renaissance interpretations of classical mythology. Its acquisition and display in public institutions have allowed for continued appreciation and scholarly study, cementing its status as a masterpiece of 16th-century Venetian art.
