Painting Description
''Diana and Actaeon'' (1556–1559) is a celebrated oil on canvas painting by the Venetian master Tiziano Vecellio, known in English as Titian. This masterpiece is part of a series of seven famous canvases known as the "poesie," which were painted for Philip II of Spain. Each of the works in the series depicts a scene from classical mythology and was intended to form a coherent visual ensemble, showcasing Titian's skill in rendering narrative and emotion through color and composition.
The painting illustrates the moment from Ovid's ''Metamorphoses'' when the young hunter Actaeon stumbles upon the goddess Diana bathing with her nymphs. Unintended as his intrusion might be, it provokes the wrath of Diana, who, feeling her chastity has been violated, transforms Actaeon into a stag, leading to his eventual death by his own hunting dogs. Titian captures the dramatic instant of discovery, with Diana in a defensive posture and Actaeon shocked and frozen in his tracks.
Measuring 185 cm × 202 cm, ''Diana and Actaeon'' is renowned for its dynamic composition, the interplay of gazes between the characters, and its rich, vibrant use of color—a hallmark of Titian's mature style. The work's execution demonstrates the artist's mastery of psychological complexity, as well as his ability to convey the textures of the natural world and the human form.
The painting is currently held in a shared arrangement between the National Gallery in London and the National Galleries of Scotland. It is widely regarded as one of the pinnacles of 16th-century Venetian art and remains a key example of the power of mythological subject matter in the Renaissance. Its influence has been profound, inspiring countless artists and continuing to draw the admiration of viewers for its technical brilliance and its poignant, timeless evocation of the human encounter with the divine.
