Painting Description
"The Tunnel" is a series of six colored lithographs created by Thomas Talbot Bury (1811–1877), an English architect and artist, in 1830. The prints depict the construction of the Thames Tunnel, which was engineered by Sir Marc Isambard Brunel and his son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The Thames Tunnel, considered an engineering marvel of its time, was the first tunnel known to have been constructed successfully underneath a navigable river, and it connected Rotherhithe and Wapping in London.
Bury's lithographs are significant for their historical and artistic value, as they provide a visual record of the tunnel's construction phases and the innovative tunnelling shield technology used by the Brunels. The series showcases the interior of the tunnel with its archways and the busy scenes of workers engaged in various stages of construction, reflecting both the industrial spirit and the technical challenges of the era.
Thomas Talbot Bury was an associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects and was known for his architectural drawings and prints. His work on "The Tunnel" stands out as a particularly important contribution to the visual documentation of 19th-century engineering projects. The lithographs were published by Ackermann & Co., a company known for its association with the production of illustrated works and prints in the 19th century.
The series not only captures a pivotal moment in the history of engineering but also serves as an example of the lithographic process, which was a relatively new printmaking technique at the time. Bury's attention to detail and his ability to convey the atmosphere of the construction site make "The Tunnel" a valuable resource for understanding the industrial advancements of the Victorian era.
Today, the original lithographs of "The Tunnel" are sought after by collectors and are held in various museum collections. They continue to be appreciated for their historical significance and as a testament to the ambitious engineering feats of the 19th century.
