Painting Description
"Bartholomew Fair" is an intricate and detail-heavy engraving by J. Bluck, based on artwork by renowned British artist Thomas Rowlandson. The piece was featured in "The Microcosm of London, or London in Miniature, Vol. I" (1808-1811), a publication that was curated and organized by Rudolph Ackermann.
Set in the streets of Smithfield, in the Ward of Farringdon Without, "Bartholomew Fair" captures the boisterous chaos and theatrics of 19th century London’s annual fair of the same name. The fair was a significant cultural event, and is represented in full swing in the engraving, with a variety of traders, performers, and Londoners populating the busy scene.
The image represents the commodity culture, social spectacle, and plebeian vitality of the fair, which is named after St. Bartholomew, the patron saint of butchers. It brings to life the fair's characteristically diverse character - its street vendors, showmen, entertainment booths, and the general public in their myriad hues.
Using his signature humorous and observational style, Rowlandson's artwork displays market stalls, show booths, and pickpockets, among other sights, all brought to life by Bluck’s fine engraving work. The piece thus provides a rich and vibrant visual record of historical London culture and urban life, true to the ethos of the poetic and literary undertones of the larger "Microcosm of London" collection.
Edited by Ackermann, a prominent publisher and member of the Royal Society of Arts, "The Microcosm of London" is widely acknowledged for its contribution to a historical understanding of the cultural and social landscape of London. As such, "Bartholomew Fair" stands as an integral visual component of this volume, capturing the dynamic and ever-changing hustle and bustle of London's street fairs.
