Painting Description
''The Voyage of Life'' is a series of four paintings created by Thomas Cole in 1842, representing an allegory of the four stages of human life: childhood, youth, manhood, and old age. The paintings follow a voyager who travels in a boat on a river through the mid-19th-century American wilderness. In each painting, accompanied by a guardian angel, the voyager rides the boat on the River of Life. The landscapes, corresponding to the seasons of the year, play a major role in telling the story.
In ''Childhood'', the infant voyager is seen at the beginning of his journey, with the river emanating from a dark cave. The landscape is lush; everything is calm and basking in the warm light of dawn, symbolizing the beginning of life. In ''Youth'', the youth takes control of the boat and aims for a shining castle in the sky. The calmness of the first painting has evolved into a sense of adventure and optimism. By the time of ''Manhood'', the adult voyager encounters a river filled with dangers. The boat is damaged, and the angel appears distant and unreachable. The landscape has become dark and dreary, reflecting the trials and tribulations of adulthood. Finally, in ''Old Age'', the old man reaches the end of his journey as the river calms, the angel guiding him to the waters that lead to the celestial realms. The skies open up and a light from heaven shines down, signifying the end of life's struggles and the promise of eternal peace.
Cole, a founder of the Hudson River School of American landscape painters, infused his work with romantic themes of the sublime and the natural world as a divine creation. ''The Voyage of Life'' series was painted for Cole's patron Samuel Ward and was well received by the public and critics alike. The series is an example of narrative painting with a moral message, which was a common genre in the 19th century. The paintings are now held in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
