Painting Description
"Susanna at the Bath" is a notable oil painting by Theodore Chasseriau, a distinguished French Romantic artist of the 19th century. Completed in 1839, the painting depicts the biblical figure Susanna bathing, unaware of the two elders watching her covertly, thus interpreting a popular narrative from the apocryphal Book of Daniel.
In the composition, Susanna is placed in the foreground with her nudity partially obscured by drapery, giving an atmosphere of intimacy and vulnerability. The lurking elders in the background add a disturbing element to the otherwise serene scene. The painting is distinct for its utilization of contrasting light and dark to highlight Susanna and the elders, showcasing Chasseriau's adept handling of chiaroscuro.
The painting measures 168 by 135.9 centimeters and is currently housed in the Condé Museum in Chantilly, France. "Susanna at the Bath" reflects the larger theme in Chasseriau's oeuvre of exploring female beauty intertwined with eroticism, exoticism and psychological depth, making the painting a striking example of his unique style that straddles the Neoclassical and Romantic movements.
While "Susanna at the Bath" was a controversial piece due to its provocative subject matter during its initial exhibition, it has since been critically appreciated and studied for its mingling of classic and romantic elements, its exploration of voyeurism and innocence, and its display of Chasseriau's virtuosity in painting the human figure.
