Painting Description
Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, was a prominent British military leader and politician, best known for his role in the Napoleonic Wars, particularly the Battle of Waterloo. Born on May 17, 1768, Paget was the eldest son of Henry Paget, 1st Earl of Uxbridge, and Jane Champagné. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, before embarking on a military career that would see him rise to the rank of Field Marshal.
Paget's military career began in earnest during the French Revolutionary Wars, where he served with distinction. However, it was during the Peninsular War and the subsequent Waterloo Campaign that he truly made his mark. As the commander of the British cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Paget played a crucial role in the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte. His leadership and bravery were instrumental in the Allied victory, although he famously lost his leg to a cannonball during the battle, an injury that led to the amputation of his right leg.
In recognition of his service, Paget was created Marquess of Anglesey in 1815. He continued to serve in various military and political roles, including as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Master-General of the Ordnance. Paget was also a Knight of the Garter and held numerous other honors and titles throughout his life.
Sir Thomas Lawrence, one of the leading portrait painters of the Regency era, captured Paget's likeness in a celebrated portrait. Lawrence was renowned for his ability to convey the character and status of his sitters, and his portrait of Paget is no exception. The painting depicts Paget in his military uniform, exuding confidence and authority, a testament to his distinguished career and noble bearing.
Paget's legacy extends beyond his military achievements; he was also a patron of the arts and an influential figure in British society. He passed away on April 29, 1854, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, leadership, and service to his country.
