Painting Description
"The First Council of Queen Victoria" is an iconic oil painting by renowned Scottish painter Sir David Wilkie. The painting was commissioned in 1838 and finished in 1839, immortalizing the first Privy Council meeting of the then newly-crowned Queen Victoria, held on June 20, 1837, the day of her accession to the throne. The immense work of art, measuring approximately 3.4 by 2.4 meters, depicts Queen Victoria amidst the council in the Red Saloon of Kensington Palace.
Wilkie’s meticulous detail and effort to stay true to realism is evident in the painting. Every figure present at the meeting, including the Duke of Wellington, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Lord Chancellor, is portrayed, totalling more than a hundred figures. Each is depicted in great historical accuracy, as Wilkie took extreme care to ensure that every costume, decoration, and individual likeness was accurate.
Unfortunately, Sir David Wilkie did not live to see his masterpiece exhibited. He died during a voyage back from the Middle East in June 1841, before the work was publicly displayed. The painting was first exhibited to the public by his executor and friend, David Roberts, in 1842. Today, "The First Council of Queen Victoria" is part of the Royal Collection and hangs in the Picture Gallery of Buckingham Palace.
Rich in historical detail and a testament to Wilkie’s artistic genius, "The First Council of Queen Victoria" remains a cornerstone of the British monarchy’s visual narrative and a gateway to understanding the socio-political landscape of the early Victorian era.
