Painting Description
''Charles I in Three Positions'', also known as ''Triple Portrait of Charles I'', is a painting by Flemish artist Sir Anthony van Dyck, dated to 1635-36. This oil on canvas work is notable for its unique composition, depicting King Charles I of England from three different angles: left profile, full face, and right profile. The painting was executed during Van Dyck's tenure as Principal Painter in Ordinary to the king, a position that allowed him intimate access to the royal personage and the opportunity to create numerous portraits that defined royal portraiture in England.
The ''Triple Portrait'' is often interpreted as a tool for creating the king's bust. It is believed to have been sent to the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini in Rome so that he could sculpt a marble bust of Charles I without the king having to leave England. Unfortunately, Bernini's bust was destroyed in a fire at the Whitehall Palace in 1698, leaving Van Dyck's painting as a primary visual document of the intended sculpture.
Measuring 84.4 cm × 99.4 cm (33.2 in × 39.1 in), the artwork is celebrated for its sophisticated depiction of the monarch and its influence on royal iconography. Van Dyck's mastery of elegance and grace is evident in the relaxed yet regal bearing of the king, and the work is imbued with the psychological complexity for which the artist is renowned. The painting is also a testament to Charles I's patronage of the arts and his desire to project an image of absolute monarchy, despite the political turmoil that would later engulf his reign.
Today, ''Charles I in Three Positions'' is held in the Royal Collection and is part of the collection at Windsor Castle. It remains a significant piece in the study of 17th-century portraiture and a key work in Van Dyck's oeuvre, reflecting the intimate relationship between artist and patron as well as the broader cultural and political contexts of the Stuart court.
