Painting Description
"The Trials and Calling of Moses" is a fresco by the Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli, created between 1481 and 1482. This work is part of a series of frescoes commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV for the walls of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, which depict events from the life of Moses and the life of Christ, symbolically paralleling each other. Botticelli, along with other prominent artists of the time such as Domenico Ghirlandaio, Pietro Perugino, and Cosimo Rosselli, was invited to contribute to the decoration of the chapel, which was intended to demonstrate the continuity between the Old Testament law given to Moses and the New Testament message of Jesus Christ.
"The Trials and Calling of Moses" specifically illustrates several episodes from the early life of Moses as described in the Book of Exodus. The fresco is divided into three main scenes, which are read from right to left, following the traditional direction for reading narrative sequences in Western art. The rightmost scene shows Moses slaying the Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew, an act that forced him to flee to Midian. The central scene depicts Moses removing his shoes before the Burning Bush, where he is called by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The leftmost scene shows Moses's life in Midian, where he defends the daughters of Jethro and waters their flock.
Botticelli's work is notable for its vivid portrayal of these biblical events, rendered with a grace and clarity that are characteristic of his style. The fresco is rich in symbolic detail and demonstrates Botticelli's skill in composing complex narrative scenes. The figures are elegantly drawn, and the landscape in which the events unfold is rendered with attention to atmospheric perspective, a technique that Botticelli and his contemporaries were developing during the Renaissance.
As a part of the Sistine Chapel's fresco cycle, "The Trials and Calling of Moses" contributes to the overarching theme of divine law and redemption that is central to the chapel's iconographic program. Botticelli's fresco is an important work within the artist's oeuvre and within the broader context of Renaissance art, reflecting both the religious fervor and the artistic innovation of the period.
