Painting Description
"The Story of Nastagio degli Onesti (detail of the second episode) 3" is a painting by the renowned Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. Created in the late 15th century, this artwork forms part of a series of four panels that depict scenes from the eighth story of the fifth day in Giovanni Boccaccio's "Decameron." This particular panel vividly illustrates the second episode of the narrative, where Nastagio degli Onesti witnesses a dramatic and supernatural chase in a pine forest near Ravenna.
In the depicted scene, a young woman, naked and terrified, is pursued by a knight and his dogs. The knight, who had loved the woman unrequitedly during his life and subsequently committed suicide, is condemned to chase and kill her repeatedly in the afterlife as a form of divine punishment for both their cruelties—hers for her indifference, and his for his despair. The gruesome moment captured by Botticelli is rich in allegorical meaning, emphasizing themes of retribution, redemption, and the consequences of earthly behaviors.
Commissioned by Lorenzo the Magnificent of the Medici family, these panels were intended as spalliere (decorative paintings installed above a piece of furniture) for the wedding of Giannozzo Pucci and Lucrezia Bini in 1483. The artwork showcases Botticelli's mastery in conveying movement and emotion, as well as his skillful use of color and composition to enhance the narrative's dramatic impact. The series is celebrated for its intricate detail and its blend of moral storytelling with aesthetic beauty, reflecting the humanistic ideals of the Renaissance period.
