Painting Description
"The Story of Nastagio degli Onesti (detail 2 of the second episode) c. 1483 is a renowned work by the Italian painter Sandro Botticelli. This painting is part of a series of four panels commissioned by Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, a cousin of Lorenzo the Magnificent, for the wedding of Giannozzo Pucci and Lucrezia Bini in 1483. The series illustrates the story of Nastagio degli Onesti, a narrative taken from the eighth novel of the fifth day in Giovanni Boccaccio's 'The Decameron.'
In the second episode, Botticelli masterfully depicts a dramatic scene where Nastagio, a nobleman from Ravenna, witnesses a horrifying spectacle in a forest. A naked woman, chased by a knight and his dogs, is caught and killed, her heart and entrails fed to the dogs. The knight reveals himself to be Guido degli Anastagi, a former suitor of the woman, who, in death, is condemned to pursue and kill her every Friday as punishment for her cruel rejection of his love during their lives.
Botticelli's painting is celebrated for its detailed representation of the narrative, its vivid portrayal of emotion, and its intricate use of color and form. The work is currently housed in the Prado Museum, Madrid, Spain. The series as a whole is considered a significant example of Botticelli's narrative style and his ability to translate complex literary themes into visual art."
