Painting Description
The North Facade of the Palais du Luxembourg, designed by the French architect Salomon de Brosse, is a significant architectural work that exemplifies the early 17th-century French Baroque style. Constructed between 1615 and 1624, the facade forms part of the Palais du Luxembourg in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, originally built for Marie de' Medici, the widow of King Henry IV of France.
The North Facade is particularly noted for its harmonious proportions and the integration of classical elements, which were inspired by the Pitti Palace in Florence, reflecting Marie de' Medici’s desire to recreate the atmosphere of her native Florence in Paris. The facade features a central avant-corps flanked by two recessed wings, creating a dynamic and rhythmic architectural composition. The use of rusticated stone on the ground floor and smoother masonry above adds textural contrast, while the repetition of arched and rectangular windows provides a rhythmic visual cadence.
Statuary and reliefs add ornamental detail to the facade, embodying themes of power and regality, which align with the palace's original function as a royal residence. Today, the Palais du Luxembourg houses the French Senate, and the North Facade, facing the Rue de Vaugirard, remains a prominent example of French Baroque architecture, attracting scholars and visitors interested in the history and development of architectural styles in France.
