Painting Description
"The Three Daughters of Cecrops Discovering Erichthonius" is a 17th-century oil painting by the Dutch Golden Age artist Salomon de Bray. The painting depicts a scene from Greek mythology involving the daughters of Cecrops, the legendary first king of Athens. According to the myth, the god Hephaestus attempted to seduce the goddess Athena, but she evaded him, causing his semen to fall on the ground. From the earth, Erichthonius was born, and Athena placed the infant in a small box, which she entrusted to the daughters of Cecrops with strict instructions not to open it. Curiosity overcame them, and upon opening the box, they discovered the child, who was part serpent.
Salomon de Bray (1597–1664) was a prominent painter, draughtsman, and writer, known for his history paintings, portraits, and architectural works. His treatment of the subject matter in "The Three Daughters of Cecrops Discovering Erichthonius" is characteristic of the Baroque period, with an emphasis on drama, emotion, and the use of light to guide the viewer's attention. The painting is notable for its depiction of the moment of revelation and the varied reactions of the daughters, which range from shock to curiosity.
The artwork is an example of the Northern Baroque style, reflecting the influence of Caravaggio and the Utrecht Caravaggisti, with whom de Bray may have been familiar. The painting's composition, use of color, and the rendering of textures and fabrics demonstrate de Bray's skill and contribute to the narrative's vividness.
While the exact date of the painting's creation is uncertain, it is believed to have been produced during the height of de Bray's career, which was marked by his membership in the Haarlem Guild of Saint Luke and his role as a co-founder of the Haarlem painter's academy.
"The Three Daughters of Cecrops Discovering Erichthonius" is considered an important work in Salomon de Bray's oeuvre, contributing to our understanding of Dutch interpretations of classical mythology during the 17th century. The painting's current location and provenance, as well as its critical reception and any significant exhibitions in which it has been featured, would provide further context for readers seeking to appreciate this work within the broader scope of European art history.
