Painting Description
The Last Judgment Polyptych (1446-52) is a monumental work by the Early Netherlandish painter Rogier van der Weyden, one of the most influential artists of the 15th century. Commissioned by Nicolas Rolin, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Burgundy, for the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune, France, this polyptych is a masterful representation of the Last Judgment, a theme common in medieval Christian art, reflecting the period's religious fervor and the preoccupation with afterlife and salvation.
Measuring approximately 220 cm in height and 548 cm in width when fully opened, the polyptych is composed of nine painted panels, hinged together in a way that allows it to be displayed in either an open or closed position. The central panel depicts Christ in Majesty, seated on a rainbow and flanked by the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, with the Apostles, saints, and angels arrayed around them. Below Christ, Archangel Michael is shown weighing souls, with the saved being led to the left towards Heaven, and the damned to the right towards Hell. The side panels depict scenes from the Last Judgment, including the resurrection of the dead and the separation of the blessed from the damned.
Van der Weyden's use of vivid colors, meticulous detail, and emotional intensity in the depiction of the figures contributes to the polyptych's powerful impact. His innovative use of space and composition, along with his ability to convey the narrative in a coherent and compelling manner, demonstrates his mastery of the medium and his understanding of the theological concepts underlying the work.
The Last Judgment Polyptych is not only a masterpiece of religious art but also a significant cultural artifact that offers insight into the spiritual and artistic climate of 15th-century Northern Europe. It remains a key work for understanding the development of panel painting in the Early Netherlandish period and the broader evolution of European art. Today, the polyptych continues to be admired for its artistic excellence and its profound expression of the themes of judgment, redemption, and divine justice.
