Painting Description
''Descent from the Cross'' (or ''The Deposition'') is a masterpiece of Northern Renaissance art, painted by the Flemish artist Rogier van der Weyden (c. 1399 – 1464). Completed around 1435, during the artist's mature period, this oil on oak panel painting is renowned for its emotional power and exquisite detail. It is considered one of van der Weyden's most influential works and is a seminal piece in the development of European painting.
The painting depicts the biblical scene of the Deposition of Christ, where the lifeless body of Jesus is being lowered from the cross after his crucifixion. The work is characterized by its dramatic composition, the complexity of its figures, and the intense expressions of grief displayed by the mourners. Van der Weyden's use of space, his manipulation of form to convey emotion, and his attention to the textures of fabrics and the human body are particularly noteworthy.
Measuring 220 cm × 262 cm, ''Descent from the Cross'' was originally created for the Chapel of Our Lady Outside the Walls in Leuven, Belgium, which was affiliated with the guild of archers, whose patron saint was St. George. The painting's patron was most likely the Leuven guild of archers, and it is believed that the crossbow held by the figure in the top left corner is a reference to them.
Today, the painting is held in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain, where it continues to be a subject of admiration and scholarly study. Its influence can be seen in the works of countless artists who followed, and it remains a touchstone for discussions of Northern Renaissance art and its profound impact on the visual representation of religious themes.
