Painting Description
The "Altar of the Last Judgement" in Beaune, also known as the Beaune Altarpiece, is a monumental polyptych created by the Early Netherlandish painter Rogier van der Weyden. Commissioned by Nicolas Rolin, the chancellor of Burgundy, and his wife, Guigone de Salins, the altarpiece was intended for the Hospices de Beaune, a charitable hospital founded by Rolin in 1443. The work was completed around 1450 and remains one of van der Weyden's most significant and ambitious projects.
The altarpiece is composed of fifteen panels, with the central panel depicting the Last Judgement. This central scene is flanked by two wings, each containing six smaller panels. When closed, the outer panels display grisaille paintings of saints and donors, creating a stark contrast to the vibrant colors and dramatic scenes revealed when the altarpiece is opened. The overall dimensions of the altarpiece are approximately 220 cm in height and 548 cm in width when fully opened.
The central panel of the Last Judgement is dominated by the figure of Christ as the Judge, seated on a rainbow and surrounded by a mandorla. Below Christ, the Archangel Michael weighs the souls of the resurrected dead, determining their fate. The blessed are shown ascending to Heaven on Christ's right, while the damned are cast into Hell on his left. The vivid and detailed depictions of Heaven and Hell reflect van der Weyden's mastery of emotion and his ability to convey complex theological concepts through visual art.
The side panels of the altarpiece depict various saints and scenes from the lives of the donors, emphasizing their piety and devotion. The intricate details and rich symbolism in each panel invite viewers to contemplate the moral and spiritual messages conveyed by the artwork.
The Beaune Altarpiece is not only a masterpiece of religious art but also a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the Burgundian court during the 15th century. Its preservation and display in the Hospices de Beaune continue to attract scholars, art historians, and visitors from around the world, ensuring its enduring legacy in the history of art.
