Roelandt Jacobsz Savery (1576–1639) was a Flemish-born Dutch Golden Age painter, draughtsman, and etcher, renowned for his detailed landscapes, animal studies, and botanical illustrations. Born in Kortrijk, in what is now Belgium, Savery was part of a family of artists and received his initial training from his brother, Jacob Savery, who was also a painter. The family fled to the Dutch Republic to escape the turmoil of the Eighty Years' War, eventually settling in Haarlem.

Savery's career flourished under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, where he was appointed court painter around 1604. During his time at the court, Savery was exposed to a rich collection of exotic animals and plants, which significantly influenced his work.
