Painting Description
"Saint-Séverin No. 1" (also known as "Saint Severin I" or "Saint-Séverin I") is a painting by French artist Robert Delaunay, completed in 1909. This work is part of a series of paintings in which Delaunay depicted the interior of the Gothic Church of Saint-Séverin in Paris. The series marks a significant period in Delaunay's artistic development, where he transitioned from a form of expression influenced by Neo-Impressionism to a more individual style that would eventually lead to his role as a co-founder of Orphism, an offshoot of Cubism focused on pure abstraction and vivid colors.
In "Saint-Séverin No. 1," Delaunay captures the play of light filtering through the stained glass windows of the church, creating a mosaic of color that reflects on the interior architecture. The painting is characterized by its fragmented surfaces and the juxtaposition of light and shadow, which serve to deconstruct the space in a manner that anticipates his later Orphist works. Delaunay's use of color and form in this series was influenced by the theories of color harmony by chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul and by the work of Neo-Impressionists like Georges Seurat.
The painting is notable for its innovative approach to representing space and light, which breaks away from traditional perspective and modeling. Delaunay's interest in the structural qualities of light, as well as his exploration of simultaneous contrast, are evident in this work. "Saint-Séverin No. 1" is an important precursor to Delaunay's subsequent ventures into pure abstraction, where color and form would become the primary subjects of his art.
Today, "Saint-Séverin No. 1" is recognized as an important work in Delaunay's oeuvre and in the development of early 20th-century modernist painting. It is held in high regard for its contribution to the evolution of abstract art and is frequently studied for its innovative use of color and its role in the transition from Post-Impressionism to the more abstract movements that followed. The painting is housed in a prominent art collection, continuing to inspire and influence artists and art enthusiasts around the world.
