Painting Description
"Les Fenêtres" (The Windows) is a series of paintings by the French artist Robert Delaunay (1885–1941), a prominent figure in the development of early 20th-century abstract art. Created in the 1910s, this series exemplifies Delaunay's transition from representational painting to a more abstract, form-focused style that would come to be known as Orphism, a movement closely related to Cubism but with a stronger emphasis on color and its expressive qualities.
In "Les Fenêtres," Delaunay breaks down the traditional perspective and representation of the window as a simple architectural element, transforming it into a motif for exploring the interplay of light, color, and form. The series features a combination of fragmented planes, vibrant hues, and dynamic compositions that evoke the rhythm and energy of modern urban life. Delaunay's windows do not serve as transparent barriers offering a view of the outside world; instead, they become the subject themselves, a canvas upon which the artist investigates the optical effects of color and the spatial relationships between shapes.
Delaunay's work on "Les Fenêtres" coincided with a period of intense theoretical exploration among avant-garde artists in Paris. Alongside his wife, Sonia Delaunay, and other artists such as František Kupka and Fernand Léger, Delaunay sought to articulate a new visual language that could capture the essence of the modern experience, characterized by the speed of technology, the vibrancy of city life, and the revolutionary changes in perception brought about by innovations such as the airplane and the Eiffel Tower.
The "Les Fenêtres" series is considered a significant contribution to the development of abstract art, reflecting Delaunay's belief in the autonomy of color and its potential to evoke emotion and create spatial depth without relying on representational forms. The works from this series are held in various prestigious collections and continue to be celebrated for their pioneering approach to abstraction and their influence on subsequent movements in modern art.
