Painting Description
The Seilern Triptych, also known as the "Entombment Triptych," is a notable work by the Early Netherlandish painter Robert Campin, who is also commonly identified with the Master of Flémalle. This exquisite piece of art, dating from around 1415 to 1420, is a fine example of the emergent Northern Renaissance style, which is characterized by its detailed realism and use of oil paints to achieve depth and luminosity.
The triptych is named after Count Antoine Seilern, a collector who bequeathed the artwork to the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where it is currently housed. The central panel of the triptych depicts the Entombment of Christ, a poignant scene from the Christian narrative of the Passion, where the body of Jesus is being placed in the tomb. This central scene is flanked by two wings: the left panel illustrates the Annunciation, where the Angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the Son of God, while the right panel shows the Resurrection of Christ, thus completing the cycle of death and rebirth that is central to Christian belief.
Campin's work is renowned for its emotional intensity and the intricate detail with which he rendered the figures and their surroundings. The Seilern Triptych is no exception; it showcases his skill in using light and shadow to create a three-dimensional effect and his ability to convey the textures of different materials, from the rich fabrics of the figures' clothing to the naturalistic depiction of plants and objects.
The triptych's detailed iconography and the inclusion of various symbolic elements, such as the instruments of the Passion and the enclosed garden (hortus conclusus), which is a symbol of Mary's purity, are reflective of the complex theological ideas of the time and the growing interest in symbolism in art.
As a masterpiece of Robert Campin's oeuvre, the Seilern Triptych is an important piece for the study of Early Netherlandish painting and the development of pictorial techniques that would come to define the Northern Renaissance. Its preservation at the Courtauld Institute ensures that it remains accessible for both public enjoyment and scholarly examination.
