Painting Description
The Seilern Triptych, also known as the Entombment Triptych, is a significant early 15th-century work attributed to the Flemish painter Robert Campin, who is often identified with the Master of Flémalle. Created between 1410 and 1420, this triptych is a notable example of early Netherlandish painting and is celebrated for its intricate detail, emotional depth, and innovative use of oil paint. The work is currently housed in the Courtauld Gallery in London.
The triptych consists of three panels, with the central panel depicting the Lamentation over the Dead Christ. This central scene is flanked by two wings that show the Annunciation to the Virgin on the left and the Resurrection of Christ on the right. The detailed rendering of figures, the use of light and shadow, and the rich, vibrant colors are characteristic of Campin's style and mark a departure from the more rigid and less naturalistic forms of earlier medieval art.
Campin's work is distinguished by its meticulous attention to detail and texture, which can be seen in the realistic depiction of fabrics, the intricate backgrounds, and the expressive faces of the figures. The emotional intensity of the scenes, particularly the central Lamentation, reflects a deep humanism and a focus on the individual experience of grief and redemption.
The Seilern Triptych is also significant for its use of oil paint, a medium that allowed for greater precision and subtlety in color transitions and texture, contributing to the lifelike quality of the figures and settings. This technique would later be perfected by Campin's contemporaries and successors, such as Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden.
Overall, the Seilern Triptych is a masterful example of early Netherlandish art, showcasing Robert Campin's pioneering techniques and his ability to convey profound emotional and spiritual themes through his meticulous and innovative approach to painting.
