Painting Description
"The Fairy Feller's Master-Stoke" is a painting by English artist Richard Dadd (1817–1886), created between 1855 and 1864. Dadd painted this intricate work while he was a patient at the Bethlem Royal Hospital in London, where he was confined after being diagnosed with a form of psychosis, which at the time was termed as criminal insanity, following the murder of his father. The painting is considered one of Dadd's most important works and is a fine example of Victorian fairy painting, a genre that was popular in the mid-19th century and focused on supernatural subjects and scenes from folklore and mythology.
Measuring 54 cm × 39.4 cm, "The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" is a small oil painting on canvas, but it is noted for its extraordinary detail and complexity. The scene depicted is a fantastical and densely populated tableau, featuring a multitude of fairy folk gathered around the central figure, the fairy feller, as he raises his axe to split a chestnut. The composition is filled with a variety of characters and creatures from folklore, as well as references to contemporary literature and Shakespearean plays, particularly "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
Dadd's meticulous attention to detail and the vivid imagination displayed in the painting have led to much interpretation and analysis. The work is often seen as a reflection of Dadd's own troubled mind and his escape into an intricate fantasy world. The painting remained unfinished at the time of Dadd's death, adding to its mystique and the sense of an unresolved narrative.
"The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke" is held in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London and has inspired various cultural works, including a song of the same name by the rock band Queen. Its enigmatic quality and the tragic story of its creator continue to fascinate audiences and contribute to its status as a masterpiece of Victorian art.
