Painting Description
"Sanctuary" is a painting by the British artist Richard Burchett (1815–1875), a significant figure in the mid-Victorian art world known for his contributions to the Pre-Raphaelite movement and art education. Completed in 1867, "Sanctuary" is a historical genre painting that depicts a scene from the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars for control of the throne of England fought between the houses of Lancaster and York from 1455 to 1485.
The painting illustrates a moment of dramatic tension and compassion, as it portrays the Lancastrian Queen Margaret and her son, the Prince of Wales, seeking refuge with an abbot after the Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471. The abbot is shown offering sanctuary to the queen and her son, highlighting the medieval right of sanctuary where churches could provide protection to those fleeing from retribution or punishment.
Burchett's work is characterized by its meticulous attention to historical detail and its vivid portrayal of the characters' emotions. The painting's composition and use of color reflect the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, of which Burchett was a contemporary, though not a member. The artist's commitment to historical accuracy and the humanistic portrayal of his subjects is evident in "Sanctuary," which remains one of his most recognized works.
"Sanctuary" is part of the collection of the Royal Holloway, University of London, where it is displayed in the Picture Gallery alongside other Victorian-era paintings. The work has been the subject of scholarly analysis and is noted for its representation of medieval history and its reflection of Victorian values and attitudes towards the past.
Richard Burchett's "Sanctuary" continues to be appreciated for its artistic merit and as an example of Victorian historical genre painting. It stands as a testament to Burchett's skill as an artist and his influence on the development of art education in Britain, particularly through his role as Headmaster of the Government School of Design, later known as the Royal College of Art.
