Painting Description
The ''Portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria'' by Remigius van Leemput is a significant work of art that captures the likeness of Henrietta Maria of France, the queen consort of King Charles I of England, Scotland, and Ireland. This painting is particularly notable as it is a copy of a section of the larger and more famous work, the "Triumph of Peace and the Arts" by Sir Anthony van Dyck, which was originally part of the ceiling decoration in the Banqueting House at Whitehall, London.
Remigius van Leemput (1609–1675) was a Flemish painter who worked in England and is known for his small-scale copies of other artists' works, as well as his original portraits. His rendition of Queen Henrietta Maria is a testament to his skill in capturing the essence and detail of Van Dyck's original composition in a reduced format. The painting is executed in oil on panel and measures 13.3 x 10.8 cm, showcasing Van Leemput's meticulous technique and attention to detail.
The portrait depicts the queen in a three-quarter view, adorned in opulent attire befitting her royal status. Her gaze is serene and dignified, reflecting the poise expected of a queen. The intricate details of her dress, the lace collar, and the luxurious fabric are rendered with precision, emphasizing the wealth and elegance of the Stuart court.
This work is not only a fine example of Van Leemput's craftsmanship but also serves as an important historical record of Van Dyck's original composition, which was destroyed by fire in 1698. The ''Portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria'' by Remigius van Leemput is held in the Royal Collection Trust and remains a valuable piece for both its artistic merit and its connection to the lost masterpiece by Van Dyck.
