Painting Description
"Henry VII, Elizabeth of York, Henry VIII, and Jane Seymour 1667" is a painting by Remigius van Leemput, a Flemish artist known for his miniature paintings and copies of works by other artists. The painting is a copy of a section of the Whitehall Mural by Hans Holbein the Younger, which was destroyed by fire in 1698. Van Leemput's work is significant as it preserves the composition and iconography of Holbein's original, which was a grand dynastic image depicting the Tudor lineage.
The painting features four key figures of the Tudor dynasty: Henry VII, the founder of the Tudor dynasty and King of England from 1485 to 1509; his wife Elizabeth of York, who helped to unify the warring houses of Lancaster and York; their son Henry VIII, one of England's most famous monarchs, known for his six marriages and the English Reformation; and Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife and mother of his only legitimate male heir, Edward VI.
Van Leemput's work is a valuable historical document, providing insight into the Tudor court's self-image and the use of portraiture for propaganda purposes. The painting is held in the Royal Collection and is an important example of 17th-century copies of lost masterpieces, offering a glimpse into the visual culture and royal iconography of the Tudor period.
