Painting Description
"The Stoning of Saint Stephen" is a significant early painting by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn, created in 1625 when the artist was just 19 years old. This work, catalogued as Bartsch number 97 and Hinterding number 125, is notable for being Rembrandt's first signed and dated painting, marking the beginning of his prolific and influential career. The painting depicts the biblical event of the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 7:54-60), where Stephen is condemned and executed by stoning for his Christian faith.
Measuring 89.5 cm by 123.6 cm, the painting is executed in oil on oak panel. It showcases Rembrandt's early mastery of chiaroscuro and his ability to convey dramatic intensity, a characteristic that would become a hallmark of his later works. The composition is dynamic, with the figures arranged in a semi-circular fashion around the central figure of Stephen, who is shown looking upwards, presumably towards a vision of Jesus standing at the right hand of God, as described in the biblical account.
The young Rembrandt's signature on the painting, "RHL" (Rembrandt Harmenszoon of Leiden), followed by the year, indicates his pride in this significant piece. "The Stoning of Saint Stephen" is also of historical interest as it provides insight into the artist's early influences, including the works of Caravaggio and the Utrecht Caravaggisti, whose dramatic use of light and shadow can be seen in the treatment of this scene.
Originally from the collection of Jean de Jullienne in Paris, the painting is now housed in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in France. It remains an important work for scholars studying the development of Rembrandt's style and the evolution of 17th-century Dutch painting. "The Stoning of Saint Stephen" is not only a testament to Rembrandt's early talent but also a poignant representation of religious martyrdom, reflecting the complex interplay between faith, violence, and the human condition that the artist would explore throughout his career.
