Painting Description
"Ephraim Bonus, Jewish Physician" is a 1647 etching by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn, depicting Ephraim Hezekiah Bueno (1599–1665), a prominent Portuguese-Jewish physician and scholar based in Amsterdam. The etching, which measures 218 x 169 mm, is also known as "Portrait of Dr. Ephraim Bueno" and is catalogued as Bartsch 278, Hind 236, and New Hollstein 236. It is one of the many portraits Rembrandt created throughout his career, showcasing his skill in capturing the character and social status of his subjects.
Ephraim Bueno, also known as Ephraim Hezekiah Bueno or Aben Esra, was a respected figure in the Sephardic community of Amsterdam, which was a refuge for Jews fleeing the Inquisition in Spain and Portugal. Bueno was not only a physician but also a poet and a writer, contributing to the intellectual life of the city. Rembrandt's etching presents Bueno in a three-quarter view, wearing a hat and a cloak, with an intense gaze that suggests his intelligence and contemplative nature.
The work is an example of Rembrandt's mastery of etching, a technique that involves incising a design onto a metal plate, usually copper, with a sharp tool called a burin. The plate is then inked, wiped clean to leave ink only in the incised lines, and pressed onto paper to create the image. Rembrandt's etchings are renowned for their detail, tonal variation, and emotional depth, and "Ephraim Bonus, Jewish Physician" is no exception. The etching demonstrates Rembrandt's ability to use light and shadow to create a sense of volume and to convey the sitter's personality.
The etching is held in several museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It remains an important work for the study of Rembrandt's portraiture and the cultural history of the Sephardic community in 17th-century Amsterdam.
